Maude Latour is a freshman at Columbia University studying philosophy and political science, but she’s also an electrifying musician, spreading her energy through venue stages and phone speakers. Maude has spent the past year translating her own philosophies and political ideals into her own musical universe interspersed with influences such as the transcendental, religion, and love for her best friend. On Instagram, you can find Maude singing in her dorm, eating a taco, and answering personal confessions from her fans in a series called “spill therapy.” Both through her music and social media, Maude is not afraid to express who she is to the world as an authentic young woman and artist.
Maude just released an upbeat, summery anthem called “Superfruit”. “Superfruit” represents being sick of small talk and feeling lonely, but at the same time, still feeling wonderful. Maude says, “It’s about a crush, it’s about summer. It’s about the feeling of pop rocks and orange juice, a frozen dream of driving down a highway in a car with my ponytail blowing in the wind. It’s about realizing bad guys are overrated and being afraid of death– but it’s all a wonderful feeling: the fact all of this can be true and it can still be summer time. We are so complex, happiness is so special. Superfruit. Yes. I know what it means for me, you can find out what it means to you.”
Maude’s music video for “Superfruit” continues to exude her raw personality. The video is reminiscent of a home video, with her singing into her hairbrush and accompanied by friends. Rather than giving in to the often perfected image of many artists, Maude is someone who feels personal and relatable to her audience.
Maude describes the backstory behind her music video, saying, “I kept getting pressured into making a music video, and I absolutely didn’t want to. It felt completely forced. Everyone in the music industry follows a formula, and I absolutely refuse to– nothing about this project is ordinary. I’ve tried making videos before, and I personally just haven’t found myself yet when I’m behind a camera with make up on, posing and looking serious. The video is exactly where I’m at right now. It’s me in my favorite clothes, with my closest friends, in the library I spend the majority of my nights, and on the campus I call home. My friend Fergus Campbell made the video with me, and we just had a blast. That’s at the core of this whole project: our rawest selves making art and having a good time, we’re just trying to save the planet.”
Just by listening to her music, seeing her music video, and following her on social media, Maude feels like a close friend—one that will listen to what you have to say and share her personal stories. Her cheerful and optimistic energy makes listeners and fans want to get up and dance with her. Maude plans to be the first president to perform at her own inauguration and there’s no doubt that that will happen.
