March 8th has been International Women’s Day, but it originates all the way back to February of 1909, when the first women’s rights day was celebrated- then called International Working Women’s Day. For decades, women have been fighting for equality, social, and political rights and although we still have a long way to go, I think we can proudly say that we have come a long way. For many people, especially younger women, women’s suffrage is taken for granted as a right- which it should be; however, it did not come easy. Neither did or is the fight for all women across the world to be educated, to eliminate all inferior stereotypes, to have equal pay, etc. However, the thing about us women is that we are unafraid to speak out and fight for what we deserve. On January 21, 2017, the Women’s March was held across the world and this rally was the most participated U.S. protest in all of history. Now that’s something to be proud of. Together women, children, and men, put their voices together to address topics such as abortion, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, and immigration reforms. Although there still are prevalent and saddening practices occurring all around the world, such as that women are even unable to drive cars in Saudi Arabia and Malala Yousafzai got shot for wanting education, these events simply propel us to speak out and fight towards justice and equality. Since 1909, we have not only received voting rights, but recently we’ve also had some prominent women leaders, more women participating in STEM, and feminism is becoming more and more popular. Although Hillary Clinton lost the election, she sets a crucial precedent as a female leader, along with Angela Merkel and Theresa May. On this International Women’s Day, I just wanted to remind everyone to never stop fighting for what you believe in and a reminder of the achievements you have accomplished along with all women across the world. Happy International Women’s Day!
